I have been on the art trail for over 25 years and have worked in many different media - wearable art, weaving, drawing and painting. Each of these areas led me to the next and, about three years ago, to book arts and calligraphy. My love of color, texture, paper, fabric, words and books have found great satisfaction in this discipline. I find great enjoyment in the challenge of working with varied elements to produce a book or a box.
I named my business Handsome Hand Books for a couple of reasons. My work is meant to be touched and handled and it is my intent that the book or box feels good in the hands of the person who is holding it. I want it to have weight and to feel satisfying on a tactile level. Weavings that are soft, supple and weighty are often described as having a handsome hand. I want this work to feel handsome in one’s hands as well.
As a calligrapher, I value well written words and writing that provides pleasure in the reading of the words as well as in the meaning of them. I strive for a handsome hand in the production of my work - good penmanship and powerful calligraphy.
